How to get an ABN for free
Apply online with the Australian Business Register. Registering for an ABN through the ABR is free (business.gov.au: Register for an Australian Business Number (opens in a new tab)), and if your application is successful you get your 11-digit ABN immediately; giving your tax file number helps it go through faster (ABR: Applying for an ABN (opens in a new tab)).

First, check you're entitled
Not everyone can have an ABN. You're entitled to one if you're carrying on or starting an enterprise in Australia, making supplies connected with Australia's indirect tax zone, or you're a Corporations Act company (ABR: ABN entitlement (opens in a new tab)).
The ABR says there's no single test for a business, but lists what one looks like: significant commercial activity of a reasonable size, an intention to make a profit, repeated and systematic activity with records kept, and running like other businesses in the industry (ABR: ABN entitlement (opens in a new tab)).
If you haven't started trading yet, you should have taken some steps, such as setting up a website or social media account for the business, buying stock or equipment, getting insurance or licences, or quoting for work (ABR: ABN entitlement (opens in a new tab)).
Applying when you're not entitled has consequences. The ABR warns you "may face prosecution or criminal charges if you apply for an ABN, register for GST and claim GST refunds when you're not entitled", and it can review your entitlement at any time (ABR: Applying for an ABN (opens in a new tab)).
What to have ready
The ABR's list, depending on your situation (ABR: What you need for your ABN application (opens in a new tab)):
- your business structure, decided before you apply (for example sole trader or company);
- your tax file number, and the TFNs of any associates such as partners, directors or trustees;
- your ACN, if the business is a company (you register the company with ASIC first: how to get an ACN);
- the date you need the ABN from, usually when business activity starts, no more than six months ahead;
- the entity's legal name, business activity, business locations, and contact details including an email address;
- any ABN you held before, and the registration number of your tax or BAS agent, if one is helping.
Giving your TFN speeds up the application if you're a sole trader, and companies should give their ACN (ATO: Business or company registrations (opens in a new tab)).
Apply in six steps
- Pick your structure. Being a sole trader is "the simplest and cheapest business structure": you're the only owner and legally responsible for the business, including its debts (ABR: Sole trader (opens in a new tab)). A company needs its ACN from ASIC before it can get an ABN (ATO: Business or company registrations (opens in a new tab)).
- Open the application. Use the ABR's online application (opens in a new tab), or use the Business Registration Service (opens in a new tab) to apply for an ABN and a business name together (ASIC: Register a business name (opens in a new tab)). A registered tax or BAS agent can also apply for you (ATO: Business or company registrations (opens in a new tab)).
- Answer the entitlement questions. The form asks questions to work out whether you're carrying on an enterprise (ABR: ABN entitlement (opens in a new tab)).
- Add other registrations if you need them. You can apply for GST, pay as you go (PAYG) withholding and a business name at the same time. If the ABN is refused, those registrations don't go ahead either (ABR: Applying for GST, PAYG and other registrations (opens in a new tab)).
- Save your confirmation. A successful application gives you the ABN straight away; print or save the confirmation. A reference number means the ABR is reviewing your application and aims to finish within 20 business days, with a letter within 14 days of approval (ABR: Applying for an ABN (opens in a new tab)).
- Check it on the register. Once it's through, it shows on ABN Lookup (ABR: Applying for an ABN (opens in a new tab)). Look it up here to see the public details on the register.
What it costs
| Item | Cost | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ABN application, through the ABR | Free | (business.gov.au: Register for an Australian Business Number (opens in a new tab)) |
| Business name, 1 year | $47 | (ASIC: Schedules of business names fees (opens in a new tab)) |
| Business name, 3 years | $108 | (ASIC: Schedules of business names fees (opens in a new tab)) |
These are the business name fees in force from 1 July 2026, and they rise with CPI each July (ASIC: Schedules of business names fees (opens in a new tab)). Some private sites charge to lodge an ABN application for you: on 30 September 2026, abn-register.com.au (opens in a new tab) advertised "Register your ABN in 5 minutes. Only $69.00." Applying directly with the ABR costs nothing.
GST: when you must register
You must register for GST in any of these cases (ATO: Registering for GST (opens in a new tab)):
- your GST turnover is $75,000 or more;
- you start a new business and expect your turnover to reach $75,000 or more in the first year;
- you're a non-profit with a GST turnover of $150,000 a year or more;
- you provide taxi or limousine travel, including ride-sourcing, whatever your turnover;
- you earn income through the sharing economy or digital platforms (for example, food delivery services or other platform-based work), where the ATO's sharing economy guidance has the detail;
- you want to claim fuel tax credits.
If you aren't registered, the ATO says to check each month whether you've reached the threshold or are likely to exceed it. You need an ABN first, and you have 21 days to register once you're required to (ATO: Registering for GST (opens in a new tab)). If none of these cases applies to you, registering is optional (ATO: Registering for GST (opens in a new tab)).
Next: your first invoice
Once you have an ABN, quote it. If you supply goods or services to a business and don't quote an ABN, the business generally has to withhold the top rate of tax, 47%, from what it pays you, as long as the total payment is more than $75 excluding GST (ATO: Withholding if ABN is not provided (opens in a new tab); ATO: Foreign resident PAYG withholding (top rate of tax: 47%) (opens in a new tab)). That's the rule the lookup on this site checks from the customer's side.
If you trade under a registered business name, show it and your ABN on documents such as invoices and purchase orders (ASIC: Register a business name (opens in a new tab)). Once you're registered for GST, a tax invoice for a sale under $1,000 must contain enough information to show (ATO: Tax invoices (opens in a new tab)):
- that it's intended to be a tax invoice;
- your identity;
- your ABN;
- the date it was issued;
- a brief description of what was sold, with quantity and price;
- the GST amount, or "Total price includes GST" when the GST is exactly one-eleventh of the total price;
- the extent to which each sale on the invoice is a taxable sale.
For sales of $1,000 or more, the invoice also needs the buyer's identity or ABN (ATO: Tax invoices (opens in a new tab)).
Keep it up to date, and cancel it when you stop
You must update your ABN details within 28 days of becoming aware of a change (ABR: ABN important facts (opens in a new tab)). If you stop, sell or close the business, cancel the ABN; cancelling also cancels its GST registration. Lodge outstanding returns first, and cancel PAYG withholding before the ABN (ABR: Cancel your ABN (opens in a new tab)).
The ABR also cancels ABNs it finds inactive, for example when no business income is reported or lodgments are overdue (ABR: ABR integrity (ABN cancellation program) (opens in a new tab)).
Questions people ask
How much does an ABN cost?
Nothing, if you apply through the Australian Business Register: "It's free to register for an ABN through the Australian Government's Australian Business Register (ABR)" (business.gov.au: Register for an Australian Business Number (opens in a new tab)). The application itself has no fee.
Can I get an ABN straight away?
Often, yes. If your application is successful "you'll receive your 11-digit ABN immediately". If you get a reference number instead, the ABR needs to check something and aims to review it within 20 business days (ABR: Applying for an ABN (opens in a new tab)).
Do I need an ABN if I earn less than $75,000?
The $75,000 figure is the GST registration threshold, not an ABN rule. The ABR says you may still need an ABN even if you earn below it (ABR: ABN important facts (opens in a new tab)). What decides it is whether you are carrying on or starting an enterprise (ABR: ABN entitlement (opens in a new tab)).
Who isn't entitled to an ABN?
Work you do as an employee. You're not entitled to an ABN for it, including as an apprentice, trade assistant or labourer, "even if you or your employer calls it contracting" (ABR: ABN entitlement (opens in a new tab)). Hobbies and private or domestic activities generally aren't enterprises either (ATO: Payments you don't withhold from (opens in a new tab)).
Do I need a business name as well?
Only if you trade under a name that isn't your own. John Smith doesn't need to register "John Smith", but must register "John Smith Gardening" (ASIC: Register a business name (opens in a new tab)). You need an ABN, or an ABN application reference number, before you can register a business name (ASIC: How to register a business name with ASIC (opens in a new tab)).
How do I check my new ABN has gone through?
Look it up. The ABR says you can check ABN Lookup at any time to see whether an ABN has been processed (ABR: Applying for an ABN (opens in a new tab)). You can use the lookup on this site too; it reads the same register.
